As you get started with smart trees, we would like to provide you with some example options of how you may set this up. Depending on your area of practice these options may not apply but hopefully give you a starting point for setting up yours.

When you use the smart trees feature for setting up treatment plans, while it takes time on the front end of your services, it will save you tons of time in charting, and reporting as you will be commenting directly on the goals and not having to re-write them for each chart note.

Tree level - This is the largest "container for goals, examples of how to name your Trees.

  1. Location of goal execution, title options include:
    1. Home program
    2. School/Preschool Goals
    3. Clinic based goals
    4. Community goals
  2. Domain areas, title options include:
    1. Self-care
    2. Leisure
    3. Fine motor
    4. Gross motor
    5. etc.
  3. Time frame, title options include:
    1. School year 2021/2022
    2. Jan-Feb 2022
    3. etc.
  4. On hold
    1. You may want a container of goals that are on hold, that will be brought back at a later time.

Branch level - This is where your long term goal would live, this is something that still needs to be broken down into smaller steps to achieve. This is the level at which you will be totalling up the cumulative score of the leaves/goals. You will be able to track overall progress at this level in terms of however many goals live within this medium container.

Leaf level - This is your short term goal, steps or levels to be completed in sequence or at the sametime. Inspired by GAS (Goal attainment scaling), it is recommended to use goals that scale by 1 or 2 variables. This lay out the trajectory of your client's treatment and how a client will progress along to eventually meet the long term goal.

Simply put the terminology for Tree, Branch and Leaf are containers that can be applied to varies different goal setting methods with endless possibilities for application from, checklist, steps, levels, that are to be completed either sequentially or simultaneously accumulating the success to give an overall representation of a clients progress.

Here are just a few examples, it could be easy to criticize the options here, it is only meant to give you an example of how you could use the tree structure to set up treatment plans and follow client progress.

Enjoy!
