Stripe & HSA/FSA Card Support
Stripe can process HSA cards, but with some important conditions:
- Merchant Category Code (MCC): Your Stripe account must be configured with a specific MCC that identifies your business as a provider of eligible medical services. This classification signals to the card issuer that the transaction qualifies for HSA/FSA use.
- Eligible Expenses Only: HSA/FSA cards will only work for transactions that are considered eligible healthcare expenses. If your business or service doesn’t fall under this category, the card may be declined.
Important: For clinics under Therabyte, we’ve automatically assigned MCC 8099, which identifies your business as a provider of eligible medical services.
How It Works
You can bill an HSA/FSA card just like a regular credit or debit card, but only if:
- Your Stripe account is properly set up to accept HSA cards.
- The cardholder’s HSA is active and has sufficient funds.
- The transaction is for a qualified medical expense.
If these conditions are met, the card should process normally through Stripe’s payment gateway.
